Cure Kids Fiji

Cure Kids Fiji was formed with Key partner Accor who wanted to give back to the people of Fiji. Children are a precious part of the Fijian culture and lifestyle yet, sadly, far too many lose their lives to basic illnesses that are treatable and preventable in other parts of the world.

Thanks to the amazing spirit and fundraising of Accor teams across Asia Pacific, through its iconic Accor Extreme Challenge, a bi-annual race, we have been able to direct funds to assist improving the health of the children of Fiji.

“One of the most vulnerable times in life is during childhood and the other is during sickness and all we can say from the hospital is thank you for putting children first. Brand new equipment can only lift the level of care we provide and facilitate better monitoring and nursing of our sick children. It has also helped lift the morale of staff significantly.”

Dr Rigamoto Taito, Head Paediatrician, Lautoka Hospital

Through Accor’s partnership with Cure Kids, Accor have helped fund:

  • The purchase of state-of-the-art equipment for the Neo-Natal and Paediatric Intensive Care Units at Lautoka Hospital which has saved so many young Fijian lives.

  • Annual visits by Paediatric kidney specialists, and Rotary-initiated INTERPLAST medical teams who carry out cleft palate and harelip surgeries.

  • Basic medical items for Nadi Hospital’s children ward.

  • Over $120,000 into a Rheumatic Heart Disease control and prevention programme.  Run by the World Heart Federation, the programme uses echo machines funded by Accor to detect and treat children early with rheumatic heart disease before their valves and heart becomes damaged.

  • In partnership with the Rotary Club of Suva, the purchase of three ventilators for the CWM Hospital of Suva.

  • $50,000 capital fund has been established.  The interest will be used to fund consumables necessary to keep the existing equipment going and, supplemented by funds from ongoing events, a replacement equipment programme put in place for the long term

Nurse-led echocardiography screening in the Fiji Islands

To determine if nurses and other inexpert operators can be trained in basic RHD echocardiography to undertake field echocardiography screening in remote settings.  To determine the sensitivity and specificity of these trained inexpert operators in detecting the presence of RHD by basic echocardiography when compared to an expert echocardiography. To use this information to develop a full training module for nurses and other inexpert operators to develop capacity and to undertake routine RHD screening in resource poor settings.

Field tests in schools and the outer Islands have already shown that the incidence of heart disease in Fijian children is much higher than previously thought. The Pacific Island region has the highest reported prevalence globally of 10-40 per 1,000 in children aged 5-14 years. Indeed of the 3,300 school children we screened in the pilot study more than 300 had RHD or congenital heart conditions and were treated thanks to our funding.

Accor Extreme Challenge to Cure Kids Fiji

Teams of two involving staff members from across Accor Asia Pacific, including several local Fijian teams, participated in an extreme adventure set around a stunning ‘secret location’ at a far off point in Fiji. Over four days, teams swam, kayaked, ran and took part in a range of challenges including an Accor Extreme Makeover – transforming Nadi Hospital’s maternity ward.
