Face of Add a Dollar 2009: Cherokee

Our journey with cancer started in June 2004. It was a long hard road to travel not knowing what was around the corner, we had many ups and downs for the next 2 years the feeling of uncertainty and will Cherry survive this, ran through our minds countless times. We were blessed with so many amazing people who helped us on this path and one of those special groups of people were CUREKIDS. Without them WE definitely would not have survived this illness. They gave us HOPE in our darkest hours and through their endless research efforts to help find cures for all our seriously ill children we persevered and gained strength knowing that with the miracles of modern medicine and the dedication and hard work of CUREKIDS Cherry continues to LIVE another day...!!

THANK YOU CUREKIDS
With much Love

Lorna

What Cure Kids is doing to Help

Cure Kids is funding on individualised treatment for cancer patients, trying to make our own immune systems better recognise and eradicate cancer. Cancer, or in Cherokee’s case, brain cancer, is simply one of those cells that has gone bad, gone over to the dark side. Unfortunately most cancer cells are in the body quietly
spreading before we even know they are there. For some reason the scout cells have missed them. These bad cells group into tumours. These smart scientists are taking the scout cells out of adults (too early to try on kids like Cherokee yet), together with the cancer cells and putting them in a dish in the laboratory. THE
REASON FOR THIS, IS SO THAT THE SCOUT CELLS HAVE NOTHING TO DO BUT RECOGNISE the cancer or bad guy cells. The scout cells are then put back into the patient so that they and the immune system know that the Cancer cells and tumours are the bad guys, look for the bad guys, and develop killer cells and immune cells.

A Giant Thank You!

Thank you for supporting Add a Dollar - 2009. We really appreciate your commitment to raising vital funds for Cure Kids to support research for children in New Zealand who live with a life threatening illness like diabetes, asthma, heart disease, cystic fibrosis and leukaemia.
