On the day

Race day starts bright and early on Sunday 13 November. Please note the timings below for registration and race start. At registration you will be issued with an official race number which must be worn at all times on the outside of all clothing.

7:00am - 8:00am Registration (for all categories)
8:10am Safety briefing and warm up
8:30am START of 17km Run and 17km Walk
8:45am START of 5km Walk

Gearing up to Go

A long-sleeved polypro or wool top and a rain jacket are mandatory minimum safety gear for all participants, so please incorporate them into your costume. Robust off-road running shoes or lightweight tramping boots are ideal for the mixed off-road terrain on the course. Food and water to sustain you through your journey will also be required along with any personal medication. An official Aid Station halfway through the course will provide water and medical assistance. Make sure you train in the gear you will use on the day to ensure you have no unpleasant fit or function gear surprises.

Practical Training Advice

Tigers.jpgTrainer to the celebrities Gaz Brown, from Auckland company Get Running and Good Health columnist, has created a six-week training programme for Walk on the Wild Side competitors. If you haven’t received your copy, give us a call. Also check out his website at www.getrunning.co.nz.

Race Director Alan Nelson has prepared training advice for competitors, including important things to think about before the day, such as clothing and hydration. Download this advice here.

There are some great walks in and around Auckland - why not give them a try while training? These listed below include both on-and off-road walking, which is a good way to train (while also passing close to some great coffee!). It is best to start slow and build up with your training, but make sure you attempt at least one 17km walk before race day!

  • Auckland Coast to Coast walkway: This 16km trail goes past five of Auckland’s volcanic sites, and includes a mixture of on- and off-road walking. You’ll also pass a coffee shop or two. Check out this link for more info.

  • Manukau Coastal walks: There are a series of wonderful little walks along the coast of the Manukau Harbour. Click here for more info – the Cape Horn walk traipses around some beautiful wee bays you may not have visited before.

  • Seven Volcanoes walk: This walk will take you around the seven central volcanoes in Auckland. Click here for the track that someone mapped out before us... be warned, however, that this is approx 22km. You might like to try it in halves!

  • Walks in Waitakere: To start training in the area of the race itself, there are many gorgeous locations for you to try. Check out the Waitakere website here.

Don’t forget to get in touch if there’s anything we can help with. This page will be regularly updated with any new information or reminders, so please make sure to check back frequently.
