The Difference
Children are a precious part of the Fijian culture and lifestyle. Yet sadly, far too many lose their lives to basic illnesses that are treatable and preventable in other parts of the world.
Thanks to the amazing spirit and fundraising of Accor teams across Asia Pacific over FJ$600,000 has been raised through its iconic Race to Survive to improve the odds for the children of Fiji. |

Here's how it's making a real difference:
“One of the most vulnerable times in life is during childhood and the other is during sickness and all we can say from the hospital is thank you for putting children first. Brand new equipment can only lift the level of care we provide and facilitate better monitoring and nursing of our sick children. It has also helped lift the moral of staff significantly.” Dr Rigamoto Taito, Head Paediatrician, Lautoka Hospital.
Through Accor’s partnership with Cure Kids, Accor have helped fund:
- The purchase of state-of-the-art equipment for the Neo-Natal and Paediatric Intensive Care Units at Lautoka Hospital which has saved so many young Fijian lives.
- Annual visits by Paediatric kidney specialists, and Rotary-initiated INTERPLAST medical teams who carry out cleft palate and harelip surgeries.
- Basic medical items for Nadi Hospital’s children ward.
- Over $120,000 into a rheumatic heart disease control and prevention programme run by the World Heart Federation that uses Accor purchased echo machines to detect early and treat children with rheumatic heart disease before their valves and heart becomes damaged.
- In partnership with the Rotary Club of Suva the purchase of three ventilators for the CWM Hospital of Suva.
- $50,000 capital fund has been established that the interest will be used to fund consumables necessary to keep the existing equipment going and, supplemented by funds from ongoing events, a replacement equipment programme put in place long term. |

Rheumatic Fever Research Project in Fiji - Working at the Top of the Cliff
| No one would ever dispute that prevention is better than cure. The need is great in Fiji and it is rare that you can visualise the “ambulance at the top of the cliff”. However, this is being achieved through a screening programme being undertaken by Dr Ben Reeves of Lautoka Hospital. Cure Kids Fiji has purchased a Transportable Rapid Echo Machine. This piece of equipment is being used to provide early detection of children who have rheumatic fever so they can be given preventative treatment before they get, often life threatening, heart disease as a result of the fever. |
 |
| Field tests in schools and the outer Islands have already shown that the incidence of heart disease in Fijian children is much higher than previously thought. |
TVNZ’s Sunday Programme on children with congential birth defects
Cure Kids Fiji and Accor Hotels together with Rotary are helping to fund surgical teams from New Zealand and Australia who regularly perform much needed operations like those highlighted in this programme.

Past events
The biannual event, what used to be the ‘Accor Race to Survive’ was first held in 2006 as a major fundraiser for Cure Kids Fiji to purchase vital medical equipment and medicines for Lautoka Hospital. The 2008 Accor Race to Survive to Cure Kids has raised more than $FJ310,000 for Cure Kids Fiji, clearly outstripping the previous amount raised of $FJ251,000 in the inaugural race in 2006.
