What happens when you win a brand new Harley Davison™ Fatboy Motorcycle in a competition? In McConnell Dowell’s case, you don’t ‘hog’ it; you go the extra mile and pay it forward.
In December 2009, McConnell Dowell won a 2010 Fatboy in a special promotion by HireQuip which donated $1 from every hire between October and December which resulted in $100,000 being donated to Cure Kids. Roger McRae, General Manager of McConnell Dowell immediately advised Cure Kids they would auction it amongst the team and donate the proceeds back – ‘paying it forward’ in the spirit the original promotion was intended to help Cure Kids turn research into hope for thousands more kiwi kids.

Unknown to Roger at the time, MacDow Superintendent, Grant Myocevich, was planning to buy a Fatboy this year. His brother owns the same model (in the same colour, it turns out!) and they are planning to ride with across the States ending in Sturgis, South Dakota, for what is one of the largest annual motorcycle events in the world. Over half a million bikers (men and women), all Harley Davidson enthusiasts, flock to this usually sleepy town every year and in 2011 Grant, his brothers and a couple of friends will be there amongst it all in for what will be the 71st annual Sturgis Rally.
“We’d watched the movie ‘Wild Hogs’ (about four friends who don their leathers and head off for a cross-country adventure) and decided let’s do it,” said Grant.
As a result of the auction, Cure Kids CEO, Vicki Lee, was delighted to receive $21,000 from McConnell Dowell. “There are thousands of children living with life-threatening illnesses right now in this country and McConnell Dowell’s generous donation helps us continue to fund research that will help us find cures.”
