The annual Photokids Competition, now in its seventeenth year has raised over $360,000 towards life-threatening illnesses that affect children. The competition attracts intense interest around the country, with thousands of votes being cast each year to decide the winner.

2011 Winner Announced
The national portrait contest which donates $30 to Cure Kids per photograph sitting is held annually and this year has been won for the eighth time by Auckland photographer John Cowan whose winning subjects were Hunter, 3, and Cooper, 2, Te Ratana depicted in a photograph with their father Valance. The family won a $5000 family holiday in the 2011 Photokids Portrait Contest Grand Final, judged on the 3rd June in Howick, Auckland.
Hundreds of photographs are entered each year and are displayed in shopping malls around New Zealand, where votes are cast to choose regional finalists in 12 separate categories. The 12 National winners are selected by internet voting.
The place getters in the Internet based National Final, are judged by public vote from portraits displayed in regional finals at supporting shopping centers throughout New Zealand. The Grand Final is decided by an independent judging panel.
The 2011 competition raised a grand total of $8000 for Cure Kids.
The 2012 "Face of Cure Kids"
This year featured a very special “Face of Cure Kids” category for Cure Kids own child ambassadors, all of who live with a life-threatening illness. The winner, Jorja Sharp who lives with burns will go on to be the face of the 2012 Photokids Competition.
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2012 competition by contacting John Cowan at Memorymaker Photography.
The contest is open to boys and girls from birth to nineteen years including siblings.
Each participant receives a professional creative portrait session in colour or black and white for a $30 donation to Cure Kids. Parents choose the category and the image to enter into the contest. The donation of thirty dollars goes to Cure Kids towards vital medical research which benefits all New Zealand children.
