Research with Results
The only way to put a fence at the top of the cliff, rather than an ambulance at the bottom is by funding research to find the cures that will save lives.
Cure Kids is more committed than ever to our mission “To improve the health of children through research and its outcomes”.
With our sole focus being to improve the health of children through research and its outcomes, we unashamedly ask our researchers to concentrate on achieving results that will help find answers to the many cruel, life-threatening illnesses that devastate the lives of Kiwi children and their families.
The 2010 funding round takes our total investment into medical research, since our inception in 1971, to over $26 million and we are very proud of what has been achieved as a result of the generosity of New Zealanders. Cure Kids' research stretches far and wide with various forms of funding, this research has helped save many young lives and has improved the quality of life for thousands of children.
Our main type of funding is through our three
Professorial Chairs of Child Health which we fund in perpetuity. These three Chairs are based in Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin and we are also currently fundraising for a fourth Chair in Child Health in Wellington. The three Chairs sit on the
Cure Kids Medical & Scientific Advisory Committee which reviews and assesses potential research projects and provides the Cure Kids Board with research grants management advice. The Committee is also responsible for allocating over $500,000 worth of grants each year to New Zealand based research projects through the annual Cure Kids Granting Round.
Cure Kids also funds four
summer studentships each year – one at each of the four medical schools in New Zealand to enable support of our budding researchers.
The Cure Kids
Kirsty McDermott Memorial Postgraduate Scholarship in Child Health Research was established in 2008. Cure Kids facilitates this fund and the inaugural recipient Sarah Holman has been supervised throughout the scholarship by Professor Stephen Robertson, Cure Kids Chair in Child Health Research.
The Cure Kids Vision “To be a credible international funder of children’s health to find cures for kids” is illustrated by the culmination of all these research opportunities.
