We say farewell to a New Zealand icon
Our beloved friend Shrek, New Zealand’s oldest and most famous sheep, has passed away at his home at Bendigo Station in Central Otago. Shrek was nearly 17 years old, and raised over $170,000 for Cure Kids throughout his amazing life.
Shrek has played an incredible role as an “ambassador” for Cure Kids. We were honoured to be his charity of choice for seven years and we are grateful for the significant role he and his owner John Perriam have played in assisting Cure Kids to fund vital medical research for children with life-threatening illnesses.
One of our Cure Kids team members, Josie Spillane has been with Shrek from the beginning and has worked side by side with John Perriam over the years to take Shrek to the world. A special bond has been created between the three of them and in Josie’s words “We are mourning the loss of an iconic New Zealander – he just happens to be a sheep. We know the Shrek Legacy will continue and we are grateful to everyone who continues to support Cure Kids in his memory.”
Perriam is planning a funeral service and will ask a friend to scatter Shrek's ashes atop Mt. Cook, New Zealand's tallest mountain.
